Catapulted.

The best thing about living in different timezones is;
I'm in his future
and he is from my past.

But we are already/still an item.

My first day as a House Officer.

Woke up at 600am. Did my early morning rituals.

From this day forward, I'm determined that I want to wake up every morning, feeling motivated and passionate to go to work. I know it will be hard since I'll wake up to the same old bed, lavender colored walls, white fluorescent wall lamp etcetra. But that won't stop me from progressing.

I left our home with my right foot first. In my heart, I quietly recited my 'dua. I hoped my day runs smoothly. For the first time in my life (sigh), I'm totally independent.

First stop, JKNS, Shah Alam.

I drove our trusted (but not so sturdy) Satria. We named the car Mike. There's a story behind that name, I'll probably write about it later (if I have the time). To cut the story short, after I finished my errands in JKNS, I continued my journey to Kajang Hospital, which will be my second home for the next two years.

Mike is actually a second hand car, which my parents bought for my sister 5 years ago in order for her to commute from Shah Alam to our house. It was when I was in 3rd year of Med School when Mike had been passed down to me (not entirely), since my sister started using another car. Mike can't stand long journeys or it will get angry and overheat. Another thing with Mike is you can't stop abruptly when you are driving it, or else it will be shocked, seize and lost it's consciousness.

I was on my way to Kajang when Mike started to give me some weird vibes (I can sense when there's something wrong with Mike. Yes, we are that attached). When we were about 500 meters away from the Hicom KESAS exit, Mike seized and lost it's consciousness. Usually I manage to start Mike back after 3 trials but it did not work this time. Surprisingly, I did not panic. I called my sister. Luckily, she was on her way to Shah Alam for her class, but she was running late. Late=Stress=High Pitch Voice when I was talking to her on the phone. It's not her fault. If I'm in her situation, I'll probably reacted the same way as she did. But somehow, that triggered me.

I called my brother for help since he's the expert when it comes to cars, and that's when I burst into tears. Heh. I was surprised that he can understand what I was saying on the phone.

Alhamdulillah, about 15 minutes later, my sister came into the rescue, and then there was this guy who works in a workshop nearby who offered help. I drove my sister's car to Kajang and she waited for her friend to pick her up there. My brother took care of the rest.

Usually when things like these happens, the first person that I will call is my mother, and she will usually call my father for help. Hmmmm. But whatever it is, I'm grateful that I have my sister and brothers around, and I can totally depend on them 24/7. Alhamdulillah.

The rest of the day was filled with endless forms filling, photocopying and briefings. There were 13 new House Officers who came to report their duty other than myself. All of them were nice and helpful. :)

Oh, and my first rotation is....Obstetrics and Gynecology! :)

------------------------------

ALLAH is GREAT. Allah menguji umatnya supaya senantiasa ingat kepada-Nya.

------------------------------

That's my story about my first day as a House Officer.

Let's hope for more interesting (and happy) stories to come! :)

Ya ALLAH, please grant me my wishes. Aminnnnnn.

Starved for Attention

(scroll ke bawah untuk points dalam Bahasa Melayu)

Do you know that almost 195 million children under 5 years of age are affected by malnutrition, with 90 percent living in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia?

Malnutrition contributes significantly to the premature death of children because the immune systems of malnourished children are less resistant to common diseases. Or in other words, malnourished children are more prone to fall sick over treatable diseases such as Pneumonia (radang paru-paru) or a simple chicken pox.

In fact, malnutrition contributes to at least 1/3rd of the 8 million annual deaths of children under five or five.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

When we continuously brag about what we ate (and gonna eat) in our Facebook or Twitter there are people living in other part of the world who find it difficult to feed their children, let alone themselves. However, we are grateful that our government provides appropriate nutritional help for children with needs like these.

For the unfortunate countries, they rely on the help from larger countries, eg. the US. US is the world’s largest food aid donor. It produces and ships hundreds of thousands of tons of fortified cereals made of corn and soy blend (CSB), which may relieve a young child’s hunger but do not provide proper nourishment. CSB does not meet standards for infant cereals intended for healthy children, let alone those who are malnourished and underweight.

So, the US sends food overseas to children that it does not use in its own nutrition programs.

THIS DOUBLE STANDARD NEEDS TO END!

In order to stop these from happening, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and VII Photo present “Starved for Attention,” a multimedia campaign exposing the neglected and largely invisible crisis of childhood malnutrition.

“Starved for Attention” aims to rewrite the story of malnutrition through a series of multimedia documentaries that seamlessly blend photography and video from some of the most accomplished and award-winning photojournalists working today.

By signing the “Starved for Attention” online petition, you can be part of the campaign to rewrite the story of malnutrition and demand that the 195 million malnourished children get the attention they need and deserve to escape the deadly cycle of malnutrition.

It makes me sad knowing that that there are millions of children out there who suffers from malnutrition, when ironically, obesity is one of the main problem here in our country.

The most that we can do now is to sign the petition to support Doctors Without Borders' efforts to demand that governments supplying humanitarian food aid ensure that the food meets nutritional standards for infants and young children.

I rewrote the story of malnutrition. How about YOU?

Excited!

I'm uber excited!

Just now, I was startled by a loud honk which came from my front gate. Ingatkan apek surat khabar lama, rupanya van Pos Laju. I'm expecting a Pos Laju delivery since last week actually. A dear friend from Ipoh asked me a favor to collect her graduation robe, so I'm expecting a letter from her containing her academic regalia forms etc.

The postman was super-cute! He was like "Ni surat nak pergi Khidmat Negara ke?". I responded "Eh, taklah..." (Dalam hati : "Wah! Pakcik ni ingat aku 17 tahun ke. Heeee"). Tapi kesian Pakcik Postman sebab kena berjemur tengah panas. Thank you Pakcik Posman! Tanpa awak, takdelah surat cinta untuk saya!

I thanked the super-cute postman, grabbed the letter and went straight into the house. I was confident that the letter was from my friend, so I didn't bother to look at it thoroughly. I wasn't expecting any letter from KKM, not at this time of the month, due to the response I got from them late last week. I called KKM asking about the induction course last Friday and they said they couldn't confirm the date, and they ask me to just wait for the letter.

Surprisingly, it's THE letter! It's just been freakin' 3 days after the phone call and it's here! Whoooohooo! Bravo Gomen! Hahaha. One worddd: EFFICIENT!

Okay, I haven't mentioned it here, my Graduation will be on the 10th of October. According to the letter, induction falls on the 11th of October, which is one day after Graduation! Alhamdulillah. I'm truly blessed. Thank you ALLAH for granting my wish :) When I was doing my Tawaf Umrah, I prayed and prayed that I'll start work not to early and not to late, hopefully when I'm ready mentally, physically and emotionally. I have a feeling that this is the perfect date to start my housemanship, Insyaallah.

Now I have to start training myself to wake up early in the morning, sort out my notes, freshen up my knowledge, buy new clothes for work and pray hard I'll be posted to the nearest hospital from home. :)

Journey Part I

Journey to the Holy Land - Makkah & Madinah

I've been to many places.
Seen so many faces.
But in this journey, everything was different.

At first, I was anxious, afraid and overwhelmed with disbelief.
Will I ever be accepted to enter HIS house?
Or even step to HIS holy land?
Am I worthy to be HIS guest?

But Allah is Merciful.
The door is always open for to seek HIS forgiveness.

"O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah . Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

[Surah Az-Zumar (The Troops) 39:53]

My sister once said, once you've been here, everything else is miscellaneous.

It was truly a blessing and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Fresh from the oven

I should be very busy at this time of the year. Being a houseman, dealing with sick people, angry consultants etc. But I decided to postpone my induction due to personal reason. For now, I'm glad of the choice I've made.

My family and I went to Saudi Arabia for 3 weeks and we just came back home earlier this month. It was truly a wonderful journey. We paid ayah a visit, stayed in our beautiful second home in Jeddah, and did our Umrah and Ziarah. Alhamdulillah. Everything went well. Although it was hard for me to bid farewell to Mecca, Madinah, ayah as well as our home, I had to do it, but praying that I will come back to this miraculous place again one day, Insya-Allah. I'll write as well as post pictures about our journey in my next post.

Oh, about the above pictures, I baked a few trays of chocolate chip cookies the other day and decided to snap some pictures. I got the recipe from a dear friend and it tastes as good as it looks, believe me. I've tried tons of chocolate chip cookies recipe from a few recipe books as well from the internet since I was in primary school, and this is by far one of the best recipe I've ever tried. Just leave a comment if you want the recipe, I'm more than happy to share :)

The End of Undergraduate Era

Friday, 21st May 2010.

[moment of silence]

Dean : Liyana....

[I raised my hand up high, high enough that it is impossible for him to miss me from the big crowd]

Dean : .......pass

I've been waiting for that very moment for 5 years. Tears of joy streamed down my face, and I wiped it with a sigh of relief. Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah. GOD is great.

------------------------------------------------------------

It all started when I got a phone call from my mother. She told me right before I had the chance to check the result from the UPU database myself. I got accepted to study medicine in UPM medical school, which was my first choice out of 7 other medical schools in Malaysia. Yes, UPM was my first choice. Why? I felt insecure. All I can think of was probably I have a higher chance of getting accepted to med school if I put UPM first rather than UM or UKM.

But I was wrong.

UPM has thousands of great things to offer other than being the country's leading university in tropical agriculture (ceewah macam nak promote pulak!)

My mother works as a Librarian in UPM since 1970s up till now. When I was little, I always refer UPM as the place where my mom work or where I go for my swimming classes (Yes, I took swimming classes in UPM when I was in primary school. LOL.) and Fardhu Ain classes. I never thought that I will end up in UPM as a student. To make things worst, I never knew that UPM offers a medical degree up until I was 18 years old! Hahaha!

Now, UPM, or FPSK to be exact, has been the reason for the person that I've become now. The wiser, sensible and Insyaallah, competent version of Liyana.

Yes, every person who uses PLUS KL-Seremban highway knows that UPM breeds big fat juicy cows, but what they don't know is UPM also produces hundreds of brilliant and capable doctors every single year since 2001! Okay, I know it is irrelevant to compare cows with doctors, but you have to agree with me on this, both doctors and cows are equally important for the survival of mankind. LOL.

------------------------------------------------------

I'm glad that I've met a lot of wonderful people during my 5 years in UPM. To my best friends for life: Fiz, Fieza, Ju and Eti. Thank you for always be there for me for five amazing years. We've been through thick and thin. I might not be the perfect friend, but I'm grateful that all of you accepted me for who I am, and I'm truly blessed. We might go our separate ways after this, but I will always remember each and every one of you as my sisters, dunia akhirat. =)

To all my classmates, thank you for helping me throughout these 5 years. I will keep those amazing memories with you guys deep in my heart. Good luck in your future undertakings! Hope all of us will be a safe and humble doctors, InsyaAllah. Do keep in touch!

To all dedicated UPM lecturers during both theory and clinical years, thank you for your time and effort. We won't be here today without your help!

To Mama, Ayah, Kak Long, Eman and Bean, thank you for being there for me 24/7. Thank you for cheering me up when I was down and keeping my spirits up!

Not to forget my grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins...thank you for supporting me all these years. I am truly honored to be the first doctor in the family. Hope there will be more doctors to come!

Oh yes, Apis, the soulmate, twin-brotha (LOL) , boyfriend & best friend. We've been through a lot throughout these 5 years. You've been a great teacher, an awesome critique and a great listener. Thank you for keeping up with me for all these years. I'll wait for you in 2 years time!

Last but not least, to all the people who have helped me throughout these 5 years; patients, hospital staffs, UPM staffs, etc. , thank you. :)

--------------------------------------------------

Dr Liyana Bt Zainal Abidin, MD(UPM).
Pergh, macam tak percaya! :p

This is only the beginning of great years to come.

After five bloody years of hardship and suffering, now the real game has just begun.

.............but before that, MARI BUANG MASA SECARA BESAR-BESARAN!

LOL.

Who knows, maybe I'll be the next Nobel Prize winner.

I've decided which hospital I want to serve in Insyaallah a few months time, provided I pass my Professional III exam (Aminnnnnnnnnn). After endless discussions with my mother and siblings, and after exchanging a few emails with my dad, I realized that it does not matter which hospital I end up working with, it's the experience that truly matters.

"Choosing the place to do whatever ship should be the least of your problems...it's how you handle these people and most importantly how you handle youself is the key..".

Those were exactly what ayah said that made me realized that I should not think too much about where I want to be posted. Thank you ayah for your advice. I miss having you around :(

I was told on Friday that all of us have to submit our form for our housemanship application the latest on Tuesday. So, today, I've spent my evening searching for my SPM certificate as well as other important things to be compiled with the form. When I was busy searching, I came across this....

Funny tak! Hahahaha! I was laughing my heart out when I saw this! But hey, I dreamt of being a doctor since I was 10 years old kot! When I was little, I always dream of becoming a scientist. Back then, I had a weird fascination over people working in the labs, with the test tubes filled with weird looking liquids, people wearing lab coats with their electrified hairdo (imagine: Albert Einstien), I was determined that one day, I will work in the lab, create something new, and win the Noble Prize (too much for a 10 year old eh?pfffttt). Dah masuk high school baru realized that there was no chemistry between me and Chemistry (the subject). Time tu baru lah fikir nak pursue a degree in Genetics (gila ambition punya highly specialized :P). But I always put Doctor as a career of choice at the back of my mind, as I think that I will be needing a miracle to get into medical school. Pejam celik tak sangka sekarang ni dah masuk my final year of medical school. It is funny how time flies when you least expect it.

Alhamdullillah, for now, I think I've acheived more that what I've dream for. But I still have a looooooooooooooonnnnnnggggggggg journey to go. Now, all I have to do is fuel up my tank with endless information and shift to gear 5.

Ya Allah, permudahkan lah jalan untuk hamba mu ini...Aminnnnn.

Graduation of Two Rockstars

[taking a deep breath]

...this going to be an emotional post for me.

It was 620 in the morning. I usually wake up around this time on weekdays, but I have a tendency to hit the snooze button just to have a few more minutes of nap before I get my early morning shower. But today, the excitement of seeing my sister, Nadia and brother, Aiman, getting their scrolls gives me some sort of like an adrenaline rush.

When I was watching the ceremony, something tickles me from within. I wonder, will I be in that same situation next year? Will I have a chance to wear the robe and toss that mortar, and most importantly, receive the honorable title? Insyaallah, I'll try my best. But please pray for my success eh? :) Nevertheless, seeing thousands of graduates receiving their scrolls with the look of relief on their faces just uplifts me.

There were two session that day. My brother's was in the morning, and there was about a thousand of graduates before him. And the situation was the same for my sister. It was tiring to wait, but at the end of the day, it was all worthit.

p.s. I've uploaded the video from the ceremony in YouTube. I bet you can easily locate both of them from the video. haha :P

CONGRATULATIONS to both Kak Long and Eman!

I'm so proud of both of you. =D

I want to fly.

I had never felt so relieved and free for months. Not even when I'm having my holiday last week.

Thanks to the closure of one chapter of disaster in my life as a medical student, the Community follow-up posting. I would like to congratulate myself after managing to do it out of scratch.

And oh,
after months of waiting, finally, I have something to look forward to.
HIS arrival.
:))

But for now, I think what I want to do is go and get a new book, probably the one with happy endings and dive into it.

Yellow feet day.

Meet Sunrise, my new pair of flats.

I owned her last week, out of my mother generosity. Sayang Mama~

I seldom buy shoes. Usually, I will buy them only when I really have to or if I feel like my feet deserves a new treat after months of wearing the same old shoe. This time, I bought her because of the second reason. I'm all fired up the first time I saw her, and I knew I have to get her.

First stop with Sunrise : KLCC.
I had lunch with a senior Petronas officer, two Lawyers and a Hotlink promoter. Nothing official just had a business meeting with 'em. Haha drama lebihh. It was my auntie, my sister, her friend and my cousin, all working under one roof. My sister is currently doing her practical in the Law Department in Petronas for one month.

After filling up my empty belly, I went to Kinokuniya. It is a sin if I don't visit Kino when I'm in KLCC, or it will be like going to Sushi King without eating sushi. Yep, I know the books are a little bit pricey compared to MPH and Borders, but I love hanging out there.

The reason why I got addicted to places full with books, story books to be exact, was my mother. My mother is a librarian and my siblings and I always follow her to work since we were small. She will bring home storybooks for us. She also often brought us to bookstores, and when we were there, one hour was usually not enough for us to search for the perfect book. Other than going the usual bookstores in malls, there was this little bookstore where she usually brought us, located in Central Market, where we can either buy or rent the books. The books there are either first or second hands. The second hands are of course, cheaper and the books are all in good conditions.

Getting back with my day with Sunrise, I decided to take a train to Central Market, since I have to wait for my sister until 5pm, and it was only 2.30pm. I has been a while since I bought my last book there, probably since high school. But it was truly worth it, despite having to get through the heavy rain and to make it worst, I've forgotten to bring along my umbrella, which is a habit of mine (in the end I'll usually end up buying a new umbrella) . I finally got my hands on one of Mitch Albom's bestselling novel, The Five People You Meet in Heaven. I was searching for Tuesdays With Morrie at first, but as I said, the bookstore was small, and I'm afraid if I'll be buried in a stack of books and I'm not very fond of dying when the people that I love was not around, as Isabella Swan said,

"...dying in the place of someone I love seems a good way to go.."

[after watching it, I understand why Edward-Cullen-Craziness are currently infecting the minds of young girls, not to forget the young-at-heart too]

It has some defect here and there, but it was perfect.

After one hour searching for my book, and my sister's as well, I roamed around Central Market to wait for the rain to stop. For my surprise, there was a stall selling printed shoulder bags. I'm allergic to anything printed, from vintage, patchwork to floral prints. I totally HAVE to get them, considering the price was cheap compared to other places. Previously, I purchased two printed shoulder bags, one I got it from Malacca, the second one from Bandung. Now I can add up another one in my collection. Yay!

The shoulder bag was blue-white-chocolate colored paisley print, I was totally decisive when I decided to buy it because it totally worth the sweat.

After the rain has stopped, which I realized only after I have bought an umbrella which cost me 10 bucks (refer to the previous statement) *greatness* I took a train back to KLCC. The umbrella was cute though and hey, I can add it up to my umbrella collections.(optimistically thinking)

A lunch accompanied by great people, hanging out in Kino, a new book and paisley-shoulder bag, not to forget a new umbrella, today was definitely a great day out, wasn't it Sunrise?

Footnote : I should write a post with the title 'The Headturning Reality of Wearing Yellow Shoes'. Haha :P
