Starved for Attention

(scroll ke bawah untuk points dalam Bahasa Melayu)

Do you know that almost 195 million children under 5 years of age are affected by malnutrition, with 90 percent living in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia?

Malnutrition contributes significantly to the premature death of children because the immune systems of malnourished children are less resistant to common diseases. Or in other words, malnourished children are more prone to fall sick over treatable diseases such as Pneumonia (radang paru-paru) or a simple chicken pox.

In fact, malnutrition contributes to at least 1/3rd of the 8 million annual deaths of children under five or five.

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

When we continuously brag about what we ate (and gonna eat) in our Facebook or Twitter there are people living in other part of the world who find it difficult to feed their children, let alone themselves. However, we are grateful that our government provides appropriate nutritional help for children with needs like these.

For the unfortunate countries, they rely on the help from larger countries, eg. the US. US is the world’s largest food aid donor. It produces and ships hundreds of thousands of tons of fortified cereals made of corn and soy blend (CSB), which may relieve a young child’s hunger but do not provide proper nourishment. CSB does not meet standards for infant cereals intended for healthy children, let alone those who are malnourished and underweight.

So, the US sends food overseas to children that it does not use in its own nutrition programs.

THIS DOUBLE STANDARD NEEDS TO END!

In order to stop these from happening, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and VII Photo present “Starved for Attention,” a multimedia campaign exposing the neglected and largely invisible crisis of childhood malnutrition.

“Starved for Attention” aims to rewrite the story of malnutrition through a series of multimedia documentaries that seamlessly blend photography and video from some of the most accomplished and award-winning photojournalists working today.

By signing the “Starved for Attention” online petition, you can be part of the campaign to rewrite the story of malnutrition and demand that the 195 million malnourished children get the attention they need and deserve to escape the deadly cycle of malnutrition.

It makes me sad knowing that that there are millions of children out there who suffers from malnutrition, when ironically, obesity is one of the main problem here in our country.

The most that we can do now is to sign the petition to support Doctors Without Borders' efforts to demand that governments supplying humanitarian food aid ensure that the food meets nutritional standards for infants and young children.

I rewrote the story of malnutrition. How about YOU?

Kadang²

Kadang², we tend to make silly mistakes.
Kadang², we hear, but we don't listen.
Kadang², when you want something so bad, you didn't realize the consequences that might arise.
Kadang², crying is the best medicine to mend a broken heart.

But I believe everything happens for a reason.

Should I keep this blog or delete it?

Should I keep this blog or delete it? Please respond, anonymously pun takpe. Your comments are greatly appreciated. :)

This abandoning-blog-thingy is getting teruk-er each day. Sorry for all my readers out there (macam ada je), but recently, I have a tendency to open-close-open my 'new post' section, most of the time I will leave it blank and end up closing it again. From now on, I won't be posting as 'frequently' as before. I'm telling this because I don't wanna put high hopes to my readers (cewah, belagak lagi ada org baca blog ni).

Anyway, what's up with people posting pictures of their trip to Broga Hill? Everytime I came across those pictures in my facebook news feed, I'll end up seeing the same set of pictures again and again. Macam duplicate pulak. Ok, random ranting of the day. I'm saying this because I'm soo jealous of those people who get a chance to witness Broga's breathtaking sceneries. Nak pergi :(

Yay! Tomorrow Mama will be coming back home from Jeddah. :)) From now on, Ayah's second home is in Jeddah. Ayah has started working there since last month and Mama accompanied him for the first month. I'm happy for Ayah, but..

I'll definitely miss his Maggi goreng, Mee Hailam and Sup Ekor.

He is a hard worker. Eventho he was a pensioner before he got this job, that never stop him from doing other works. He loves gardening, and he is a good carpenter. Come visit our home, I'll show you all of the cupboards, cabinets and tables that he has worked on. We even have our own hand-made waterfall in our front yard. I will definitely miss the cluttering noises when he's busy building a new furniture for the house.

I'll definitely miss having late night snacks with him. Usually, he sleeps quite late as he loves to watch the TV late at night. If I'm still up, and he happen to make a sandwich for his supper, he will make another one for me without me asking for it.

I'll definitely miss his jokes.

I'll definitely miss HIM.

He is not the type of father who is open in term of showing his love towards his children. He has his own way of showing it, and I love him for that. Ayah, do take care, and come back home as frequently as you can ok. Ikan-ikan ayah dah rindu kat ayah ni. hehe.

I have to stop here, in dire need to press the forward button now. Can't wait to see Mama tomorrow!

Zero Ten.

HELLO 2010!

The clock strikes 1200am.

I was sitting on the sofa, holding a cup of hot tea, watching....

Devdas.

A good start to the new year indeed.

Pfffffffffttt

Actually, I was planning on going to a place where I can get a good view of the fireworks display. I wanted to take some pretty shots of it. But turns out that my foot does not allow me to do so. I think it got knocked by something last year (yesterday,to be exact.:P) or I hit something causing it to bruise real bad. At last, I ended up celebrating new year with Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai. To make things more interesting, Shah Rukh Khan died at the end of the movie *sigh*.

Don't get me wrong. Not celebrating new year does not mean its the end of my life. Staying home during new year's eve has been my yearly routine for the past, oh I don't know, a decade probably? The only thing that attracts me during new years are the fireworks display, nothing more than that. We used to have a chance to see fireworks from our front yard. But now, the only thing that's left is the deafening sound of it.

Tapi takpe lah, this year tak dapat tengok bunga api, tengok kat SINI pun jadi lah.

Before I end this post, can you do me a favor? Please pray for me, as well as my friends, to do well in our studies as out BIG exam is getting nearer. This exam is our ticket to get that M.D. title at the end of our names. Aminnnnnn. Thanks :)))

Good Bye ZERO-NINE.
You were AWESOFRICKINTASTIC!

Hello ZERO-TEN.
Please, don't be so rough on me.

Happy new year peeps!

P/s.: I hate reminding myself that the exam is around the corner as I will end up with a new zit on my face grrr!

An opinion from an observant.

I've been waiting to write about this for a while. Since the purpose of having this blog is for me to share things which has been bugging me, so might as well I blurt it out rather that let it stick in my mind for GOD knows how long.

Since, InsyaAllah, in plus minus a year, I will become a certified Doctor, and will be working for the government for TEN years. Nope, that isn't a typo. *please pray for me*

After 4 years and one month of being a humble medical student of UPM, I have received a number of opinions regarding Doctors, particularly those working in the government. Most of the so-called opinions, were in the form of criticism. And out of all the criticism, most of them were being expressed in such anger that me myself cannot restrain from being angry to that particular doctors (talk about defending my own clan :P). But in between all that anger and hatred , I know there are a number of people who doesn't feel that way towards them, and these people includes the doctors' immediate family members, the doctors' with good looks and humor, doctors' who give free MCs, patients who are patience, patient who has a crush on doctors and I think thats all about it. Sadly, that list of people is quite restricted.

Back in the old days, Doctor is considered as the most noble proffession. Nowadays, doctors is being treated more or less like a kopitiam shop. Once you taste a sip of white coffee in Doctor X's kopitiam and feel like it doesn't give you the uumph, you will tend to go to Doctor Y's kopitiam the next morning. Doctor shopping is currently a new trend in our society, particularly in the urban areas. Since the society is more 'educated' (or should I change it to 'richer') nowadays, they tend to seek for various opinions regarding their sickness. I'm not saying that this kind of practice is wrong, it is just the matter of trust. Or is it the quality of doctors nowadays is not on par as before? For me, being a good doctor is just a matter of experience. The textbook that they were using back then doesn't change much today pun. The experiences which adds up after several years practicing makes people wiser than they were before.

The other thing that has been bugging me since I started my clinical years in medical school is why do the patients always think that once they step in a doctor's office, they will assume that the doctor knew about their sickness already?.

Come on, we are mere humans for God's sake. It's not like we have some kind of power where we can read the mind of our patient. From my experience, A LOT of people asked me why do doctors have to ask a lot of questions during consultations. They expect us to just talk a little, and touch a lot! No people, it doesn't work that way. Doctors are not molesters. If we are, might as well we drop everything and be a Masseuse.

"Your medical history will be some of the most important information your doctor needs in reaching a diagnosis..."
, those are the words (not exactly-lah) which I will be telling the patients or those angry people if they start to question me on the purpose of doctors asking a lot of questions during consultations. And yes, I received a lot of "ohhhhh..." and "yeke...", after explaining to them. I'm expressing all this opinions not for the sake of condemning a particular person. Generally, all of us have our own opinion about everthing. But there are always a reason for an action. Everthing in life has a purpose.

Oh, last but not least, I'm not having my PMS.

Never the best feeling.

I always think that I'm inadequate.

When it comes to people, eventhough they are at the level of my waist, I have a feeling that they are above me in some aspect. Its not that I feel intimidated by litte kids, I'm not that stunted. It is just like I'm not living my life full enough to be wiser, to be strong enough to stand up and speak. Sometimes I think that the voices inside me dominates my sound box. I'm not hallucinating, just don't get me wrong. I have not lost my sanity, I know.

Eloquence is really hard to attain, but it is easy to act like you are eloquent enough to face the world. I hope some day it will come to me.

Although I know, it might not be easy.

Hiding in the closet.

When I was little, I used to love playing hide and seek with my brothers and sister.I used to be the toughest one to be found, as far as I can remember. Thanks to the anticipatory anxiety I felt everytime we were starting a game, I will find the toughest hiding spot in my house. Once, I hid underneath the tudung saji. My brother who was the one searching, came in and out of the room and could not even locate me when the fact was the tudung saji (with me inside) was located in the center of the room. I won the game that day :).

But if we were to repeat those precious moments in the near future, I think it will be impossible for me to fit inside the tudung saji like I used to be. But that does not mean I won't play hide and seek anymore. I can still fit inside a closet ;). Closet was also one of my favorite hiding spot, but not really a stratergic place to hide (you know what I mean if you have played hide and seek enough in your life).

I wasn't planning to talk about hide and seek in the first place actually. Yesterday, I was looking for something to wear and suddenly, something smacked on me..

I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO WEAR!

Okay, thats probably too drastic. Lets change it..

I NEED TO RENEW and revamp MY WARDROBE!

Nope, that is not my closet. obviously.

But if I have those, it will definitely be a breath of fresh air. Hmmphh.

Confessions of a Signboard Enthusiast

Confession: I have a thing with signboards.

Especially the peculiar ones.

Here are some of it which I think are totally odd
and it is a sin if I don't post it in my blog.

#1

Location : Port Dickson's Mosque

My friends and I were on our way to grab our lunch when we saw this signboard. It was near to the main gate to the mosque. Obviously, they want to avoid people from blocking the main entrance. But we were laughing our hearts out when we read the "Harap Faham" part.

Memang orang Malaysia ni kebanyakannya
tak faham bahasa.
LOL

#2

Location: Bandar Hilir, Melaka

When you are in Malacca, and you have a couple of days off left and you have no idea where will be your next holiday destination, don't hesitate to go to London. It is only 10632 kilometers away.

#3

Location : Dago Plaza, Bandung, Indonesia

I was pretty amazed when I saw this signboard to the washroom. I get the bananas and all, but apples? I have to think real hard to get the 'picture'. Probably pears are hard to find there.

#4

Location: Taman Safari, Puncak, Indonesia

Lesson of the day, ponies bites.

I'm no rockstar.

I might not be the the person who plays the guitar and sing songs about life and love in front of a bunch of music enthusiasts. If you can accept an off tuned, low pitched and flat sound accompanying a strum of a guitar played in a manner where the deaf wishes not to hear if they got a chance to gain their sense of hearing, then you are more than welcome to buy the ticket to my concert. But mind me, I don't have a myspace music account for me to keep track of my fans and also to post items regarding the upcoming events in my life, which most rockstars (or rockstar wanna-be) have. So, I'm no rockstar.

The thing is, I'm not even a rock, so why dream on becoming a star?

I'm soft. I'm consists of a vanilla-cream-filled core , covered by a soft bun which melts in you mouth the moment you take the first bite. Don't touch me when your palms are sweaty, or I'll melt in your hand. Things will definitely get messy if you play with me. So, lesson one, wipe you hands before you have any intention to come near me. Hence, I'm not even close to the family of rocks. I'm indulge-able. Haha. The point is, my interpretation of rock here has nothing to do with the head banding or screaming-your lungs out type of songs. Rock equals to hard and pain.

But in reality, there is no such thing as a soft-star or even an indulge-able star. My interpretation of a star is not based on fortune. For me, fame is the key essence of becoming a star. But I believe fame has nothing to do with your position in the society. Fame is when you have the greatest circle of family and friends around you, who supports you and never fail to push you to the top. They love you unconditionally, and sits beside you when you are at the lowest point in your life. They unleash the best in you, and let you glow. That glow is what makes you the star. I'm no ordinary star.I glow because of the people who is in my life, in the past, present and hopefully, the future.

Pertaining to the earlier question,

I'm not even a rock, so why dream on becoming a star?

My answer would be,

I am a star, and I had never dream of becoming a rock.

............and I'm proud to be a soft-indulge-able-glowing-star!
